Re: A small barrel of Black Powder

Any thoughts? Here's a link to the Jamestown Cooperage: https://www.jamestowncooperage.com/fort-loudoun-gunpowder-casks.html . They talk about cask size and have pictures. Here's a bit you might find relevant: "British military of the 18th century used several different sizes of copper or sapling b...

Re: spell casting in armor?

If you're wearing armor you get -1 SL on casting and channeling tests per point of armor; see page 237, "Repelling the Winds." Two exceptions: if you have the Arcane magic (Metal) talent then you can cast in metal armor with no penalty, and if you have the Arcane magic (Beasts) talent you can cast i...

Re: Totally 'Ammered: An attempt at converting Runes to 4e

How do we feel about 'sealing' spells with Fortune or Resilience Points? I'm just wondering if I can make it more interesting than a series of rolls. I think giving up a Resilience point is a ready-made mechanic for introducing "permanent" magical effects. It's expensive enough that you won't have ...

Re: Some advice for advancing my wizard

First question (finally!): is it ok to take Aetheric attunement a second time? In 4th edition, you cannot take Talents from an earlier career step. So if you want a second level of AA, you'll have to purchase it while you're an Apprentice, before you advance to Wizard. This also means that once you...

Re: Character Creation Weapon Skills

What is "optimal for the role" about a halfling having experience using a sling? If you play a halfling servant why should they know how to fight? From a metagame standpoint the servant is just tough and nimble, not a trained warrior. So why would optimizing them involve slings? Sorry, I wasn't com...

Re: Character Creation Weapon Skills

Though I still think there's a mismatch between RAW and the two official halfling pregens listed in the adventure books It seems to be a common industry failing (IMO) that Pregens (a) don't actually follow the character creation rules and (b) aren't optimized for the role they're intended to fulfil...

Re: Character Creation Weapon Skills

Yes, the rule is you can transfer to any first tier career in any class, subject to "GM may require in-game justification" (see p49). It just costs more to switch to a career in a different class. Note that Sali skips a bunch of levels in her transfer!... [and] ...The first adventure in the Starter ...

Yeah, there's a lot of fiddliness. That's the main turn-off. It does work but you have to remember a lot. If it were simpler (one modifier at a time would be a good start), that would help.

I'm hoping the GM's screed will help somewhat too.
Ah yes. I always enjoy a well-designed GM screed.

Re: Magic 4th edition

why choose simple, limited Wizardry when Lord Slaanesh offers both magic and the most exquisite pleasures of this realm and infinite others? Lol. To that end, why go color when the 'Witch!' talent lets you get any spell in any color you want? Mix n' Max. And, you get bleeding as a side effect, whic...

Re: Magic 4th edition

Pick the one you want and makes you happy to play. I don't think the differences between various color wizards is anywhere near as big as the differences between 'wizard' and 'non-wizard.' All wizards in WFRP4 share a large list of spells, anyway.

Re: Removing advantage from the game?

Thanks again for the reply. I'll keep my fingers crossed for published option rules. :) Page 164 has a call-out box "Options: Limiting Advantage". They recommend a limit of either 2 or Init Bonus. Either would be more limited than the 'max 6' you decided to house rule, so if you're happy with your ...

Re: Combat example

risk that cannot be properly controlled by the gamemaster isn't a good thing . I somewhat disagree. Players do crazy things, including taking risks the gamemaster never anticipated them taking. These situations can be hard to GM (especially if you're GMing a set adventure, rather than a more sandbo...

Re: Combat example

My experience is that if the PCs don't take control of a situation and blunder into battle at least one of them is going to get maimed. My PCs are still under 2k though. So I'm still sorting out the mess of difficulty adjustment. Here's a combat example though...The fight was not intended to be par...

Re: Combat example

Making the game more accessible is surely a good thing. I agree. But if I were truly a brand-new GM, I'd probably try one of the *free* intro adventures C7 advertises and offers. And those have pre-built adversaries. Criticism of the lack of such in the core book is fair. But credit where it's due,...

Re: Combat example

Still, it irks me after more than 25 years of GMing, that brand new RPG systems have such hard to grasp rules in them. It is as if the authors have no idea how their rules should work in a de facto roleplaying session. It is so theoretical at times it hurts... ...So, I really wonder that new RPGs a...

randomly interspaced full-page art that contributes nothing I like art in my RPGs. I don't think it contributes nothing. I suppose in this day and age even if you buy the rulebook in a bricks and mortar store the next thing you do is hit up the internet to see what else is available. Yep. And I think this also figures into the '...for space reasons' problem too. The ability to provide supplementary material on-line p...

Re: Combat example

At worst, this "advice" should have been printed in the book at the beginning of the bestiary The first paragraph of the bestiary describes the 'build from starter example' approach. From Andy Law's post it sounds to me like the 'toolbox' approach they took was fully intended, they had specific rea...

Re: Combat example

Fights do swing from time to time of course and novice PCs can die one shot from a very bad roll (I am fine with that). But as GM unless you failed when balancing the encounter it’s not hard to keep things reasonnably under control and fine tune the feeling of danger in key moments with PCs in tier...

Re: Combat example

I can't see a reliable way to manage 4th edition swingyness+snowball effect in that. Fair enough. Do you think the Optional sidebar on p164 is a reliable way to manage 4th edition swingyness? Game-design is interesting to me... Personally I got more annoyed by denialism or proposal for "simple fixe...
