Re: New campaign: Oldenhaller contract aka Boardwalk Empire
Haven't done anything similar, but that is interesting idea and gives interesting possibilities to expand. So, basically there would be some sort of prohibition era going on in the Empire. And, Nuln (former capital) is pretty easy going and pretty big city (maybe biggest that time?). Other possibil...

New campaign: Oldenhaller contract aka Boardwalk Empire
Hey forumites, I am starting a new campaign in a few weeks and just wanted to share some details. The setup will be 1st ed with a few houserules thrown in (most notably the Endevours from 4th ed) set in 2312. So just about 10 years after Magnus the Pious has saved the Empire and is busy rebuilding i...

Re: Melee (Parry) and Shields
You are right, thank you for pointing this out. The fact that the current rules make it so that carrying a shield in the main hand and a weapon in the off hand can be better than the other way around speaks for itself about how current rules could be further improved. Oddly enough the best melee st...

Re: WFRP 4 analysis
So not CpnZapp obviously - but I will answer that anyway.
I have found it much easier to import the few good things from 4th into 1st than to house rule 4th.
But I never had a big problem with the way magic works in 1st edition so keep that in mind.

Re: Attempt to correct the whiff factor: A ToHit Chart
Thanks Makrellen! I'm not sure I understand all of your reasoning, but I do appreciate the response. Have you tried any Powered by the Apocalypse game? Like Dungeon World perhaps? I think the main thing to take away from any PbtA game is that roleplaying can be great even if it is only the players ...

Re: Attempt to correct the whiff factor: A ToHit Chart
So while I really like the idea (there is something beautiful in a symmetric chart ;-) ) I think there is a big assumption that is not being adressed in what you are trying to achieve. In a wargame with two players opposing each other it is important to balance attacker and defender capability - oth...

Re: WFRP 4 analysis
So for a starting human to catch up to staring elf in WS would be 10 increases (elves start with 2d10 +30 compared to 2d10 +20 for humans). That would cost the human 275 XP. But when the game starts the elf would still pay 25 XP for his first increase where as the human would pay 40 XP. So essentia...

Re: Questions about Rough Night at the Three Feathers
I absolutely love this scenario - I must have run it at least 3 times by now :-) One word of advise: Make a simple timeline on a piece of paper with just the headlines of each event. There are so many things happening at the same time that it's super easy to forget one event. And don't be surprised ...

Re: WFRP 4 analysis
As someone who doesn’t have fourth edition, I’d like to know why you couldn’t compensate the advantage of elves and dwarfs at chargen with extra XP for the less advantaged races. So either you choose an elf, or you choose a human and get 600 XP extra to spend on skills and advances. Also - in 4th e...

Re: WFRP 4 analysis
I've run WFRP4e once, and it was fun. I like the system more or less, and if you like 2e I think 4e's material is easily converted back, at least compared to 3e. Skills work better in 4e than 2e - where a Perception Skill check without the skill gives a PC about a 10-20% chance of success. Advantag...

Re: WFRP 4 analysis
I generally agree with everything you wrote - thanks for taking the time to spell this out. There are 5 things in particular that made 4th ed a dealbraker for me: Loads of special rules and exceptions in weapon qualities Loads of special rules and exceptions in monster traits Loads of special rules ...

Re: Fate points and critical hits
I usually let the situation play out in full, and then allow the players to sacrifice Fate points to change the outcome for their character. I've played systems where there were mechanics like 'Inspiration' that allowed players to spend points to change or influence outcomes in mid-flight, but I've...

Re: Fate points and critical hits
Right now I am leaning towards keeping critical hits persistent but flatten out the critical curve (so that you get more critical hits that maim and cause bleeding but less sudden death) and making sure that characters don´t die from a butched surgery roll. So essentially: You can´t avoid the effect...

Re: Fate points and critical hits
In my games spending a Fate Point voids the roll and PCs are simply knocked out or otherwise taken out of action. Players are required to create some reason why they avoided the death blow -- slipped on a rock, a miraculous bird flew by at just the right moment, the sun reflected off armor at just ...

Re: Fate points and critical hits
I've played wfrp since 2006. I've always seen PCs killed by 9+ critics of more rarely blood loss, but the blood loss critics with no loss of any body part... I know, it seems impossible :D I never decided what I was going to do with critics that take apart body parts. Probably today I would go with...

Fate points and critical hits
So after playing 1st and 2nd ed for many years I recently realized something about Fate points that has bugged me at the back of my brain... I have always ruled that players could use a Fate point to avoid death. As in - if you get hit by a critical hit then you resolve it and if it means death then...

Re: Endeavours from 4th ed
Just adding that the idea is to have an Endeavours phase between every adventure, and to limit the number to 3 even if that downtime is longer than three weeks. Central to the concept is also the random events that not only provide spice (inspiration) on what your character is doing during downtime...
