Riding hell for leather, possible house rules?

Hey, anyone know of any good rules for really pushing the horses? Trying to get away from pursuers, and the other way around. The poor beasts will eventually perish, but no idea how long they can go.

A good question! i remember poaching rules for this off a western-setting RPG when it came up once, but i don't know if there's anything official for WFRP. i'll see if that book is in my storage later and give you the broad rules if i find it.

After searching the boxes of books i don't check anymore (and clearing more dust than i expected) i have to concede i don't have the book with rules for pushing horses i remembered. i'll float the question to a few friends, but i'm gonna assume they don't have it since most of them sold any books they didn't actively plan on using ages ago.

many apologies.

Well, if endurance rides could ride like 50 to 100 miles per day, so pretty long (with good horses). I think the speed is important here too. How fast do you push the mount?

I'm not anyway expert with horses. Don't know how much they can be pushed. But, maybe penalty to Wounds each hour - 1 automatic wound point of damage. Besides this - Toughness Test (it could become more harder as longer you go) and failure means 1 extra Wound.

Yeah, I read about endurance riders. Hundred miles is a lot of ground, but not super fast. Was thinking of True Grit, Cogburn killing the horse getting the girl to a doctor.

Interwebses say a horse can gallop for three miles. Change to canter, and you can go fifteen (with a few short pauses). During my military service I remember our CO telling us it is the not distance that kills you — it is the time you take. Seems to work with horses as well.

Gallop at 25-30 mph
Canter at 12-13 mph
Trot at 8-9 mph

Rules state movement of 8 equals 7 mph (overland, unhampered). A bit off the mark, but works for trot.

Hm... I am sure all this can be worked into a table of sorts with some more thought put into it. I guess.

Or then I just kill all their horses! It is a grim and perilous world.

I think the horses can be pushed pretty easily to go just too long and too fast... which is not good for them eventually. But, they probably cannot hold their top speed too long.

Just subtract automatically Wounds based on the speed per hour. And when they run out... well, the end. Idea of Toughness Test (and extra damage), was to make this even more dangerous and little more random.

I seriously doubt it given that it is copyrighted material and given that it is for sale on DTRPG last time i looked.

Summaries are ok, copy-paste is not. Sorry, it’s a bit of extra work but it’ll keep GW’s attorneys away.

I didn't think that was possible. And you've just named them...

I know that this is 6 months late but I wrote some rules that might interest you:
Rawhide - expanded rules for enlivening those long days in the saddle, particularly those foolish enough to steal horse without knowing how to ride... With particular attention to riding conditions, rider's ability & mount's performance. DOC / PDF
