Heresy Unleashed: Have AoS Battletomes something to offer?

As many of us know the old army books, and other books, of the Warhammer Fantasy Battle game are becoming, in my experience, harder to get hold of, and I don't have a full library of them already :(, and for that reason I would ask if someone have an opinion on if the Battletomes of Age of Sigmar have any useful information in them that can be mined for games in the Old (or beyond that part) World? I am talking about characters, magical stuff, factions etc. that can justify getting hold of the Battletomes?

Full disclosure, I've only flipped through the Sylvaneth Battletome briefly and that is the limit of my experience with them.

I think they will be supremely useful if/when C7 gets around to publishing the Age of Sigmar RPG. What I saw was really useful for helping to set the tone both for the characters as well as the different worlds of Age of Sigmar in a similar way to how the old WFB Armybooks are useful for WFRP games.

I also think they may be of some use for niche things like the Sylvaneth in WFRP. Dryads/Treemen didn't get much description from a fluff standpoint in the old Wood Elf Armybooks. Now that they Sylvaneth are essentially their own faction, it may be possible to glean some info for an Athel Loren heavy campaign.

It sounds reassuring that there is stuff to get.

I guess I'll have to be a bit picky about what to get and not to get in order to expand "my" Warhammer setting with new additions. Sylvaneth sounds like it could be an interesting addition to expand certain areas of the world with, and introduce new important characters, although still beneath the traditional top-dogs, so that the players' won't be able to predict or already know all things in the great scheme of things.

aren't sylvaneth not dryads but elf souls in what effectively amounts to tree versions of the 40k wraithguard? i recall being in a discusson about dryads and some Ao$ player running their mouth before having to shut him up about that.

So I took a look, they are definitely not elf souls. There are some references to the "protectors" of the mythic past aka the old world, but those are just half remembered things and legends (like how the old protectors used to rally around cloth banners).

Interesting, I guess the only way to find out is to get hold of a copy and see where that leads me.

Just want to say that I've gone through the "Maggothkin of Nurgle" Battletome to the AoS. And this is my impressions from it.

The art in it was absolutely beautiful. Wonderful and invocative pictures of the creatures and followers of Nurgle. Secondly it had an interesting discussion about what Nurgle is, and also one regarding his relation with the Horned Rat which was interesting and put some ideas into my head about how such cooperation or hostility between their followers might work. I didn't fall flat on my back and gazed at the stars by it, but I felt it was interesting even while it wasn't very long. There were also some cool ideas for Champions of Nurgle in there but I had hoped for more ideas about the more rank-and-file followers of the Lord of Decay. So in that regard it was a bit of a downer. But there were a few ideas for Nurgle warbands, that could probably be spinned into cults, to use as basis for such as well as stuff that could perhaps be used to give individual cults of Nurgle a bit more flavor. Nothing a good creative mind couldn't come up with on its own, but if you're like me and could use a push to start filling a blank piece of papper or an empty word document, then this could be useful.

So my final verdict is that it was ok to good, but I felt that it was overpriced in regards to what I could mine from it for Old World games. I didn't really know what to expect from it, and I will buy more Battletomes for subjects where I could use some additional inspiration, but I feel that it wasn't really all the things I had hoped it would be.
