I'm concerned about what this might mean for WFRP products, and for the tone of the Old World in general. I was hoping that WFRP products, whether unofficial or official and licenced, would become increasingly free of Games Workshop’s input and restrictions since Warhammer Fantasy Battles was discontinued. I would think that any chance of that has just disappeared.

Yep, saw that earlier.

I guess only time will tell though. It may also be not too bad a thing if they're going for a different tone the later WFB editions, they do afterall, have their very high fantasy table top game with Age of Sigmar now. I'm probably giving GW too much credit though.

Indeed. It very much depends on which version of the Warhammer Fantasy Battle Old World they recreate.

GW will want to differentiate this from Age of Sigmar and probably reflect the Total War game... so I expect they'll go for an aesthetic which is lower fantasy than AOS. References to square bases suggest it's going to be more unit-based and less about skirmish.

I'm cautiously optimistic.

1) I love the idea that we may see a return to the Old World, it keeps it alive. The more it stays alive, the more we'll continue to see continued, active investment in WFRP.
2) As a longtime model collector, hopefully this means that we'll continue to see new sculpts and new ideas for inspiration in our WFRP games whether you collect/use the minis or not.
3) As a longtime WFB player, a chance to use my models is always welcome. Hopefully we will see options for both large scale and small scale battles. After my current campaign wraps up, I'm going to start working on a WFB/WFRP integrated campaign where some scenes will be played with regular WFRP rules, and some accompanying rules will be a welcome help (yes, I know the announcement says it's a few years out).

I would prefer a low fantasy game, or 'realistic' fantasy, but i wouldn't tagTotal War up as low fantasy.

i've got heavy metal album covers that are "low fantasy" compared to Ao$, if we're honest. if they don't go the "cram random bits in every creavise of the minis" route they were going in by 8th they might have my attention but i'm expecting this to be a crude money grab for GW uing reissues and bad rules.

I felt the same, but then again Cubicle 7 already seemed committed - presumably they had no choice - to adhere to the "present" GW Warhammer canon. The new version of TEW seems geared to harmonize the very different original campaign background with the newer version of the setting. So I'm not sure how much difference that will make.

From what i can see you're not wrong @Theo. Time will tell. Whatever they are going to be producing it's two or years away according to the Warhammer Community post, and as some have pointed out on another forum it may not actually materialise in the end if there is a chance of management or even if not.

Cautiously positive news to me. But to early to say how it will come out.

Interesting news.

I have wondered - How successful has Age of Sigmar actually been ? Has it been able to bring new generation of young players to Warhammer ? How much did they lose old WFB fans ? Has it been commercial success ? GW certainly has put great effort to AoS, but still… It was little strange that they didn't even think to continue some amount supporting the World-That-Was (before total destruction).

I would imagine that by not continuing any support GW was hoping to essentially force the old Warhammer players to switch to AoS by leaving no alternatives to split the Warhammer Fantasy gaming community between.

Ok, that article did mention: "Warhammer Age of Sigmar has become by far, the most successful fantasy game ever"

There was a split/splinter of the WFB community, as there is a fan project called the 9th world (?) which creates a new ruleset for the existant WFB minautes that's much more in keeping with older WFB games. I guess it's not disimilar to the Pathfinder phenomona.

I can imagine that. But I don't think that a fan project can create as a large a split as an officially supported product line, regardless of the quality of the fan project.

I don't think 9th Age (or Kings Of War, or whatever) will make much of difference to Games Workshop's decision. If the profit is in the miniatures then they will still make profit whichever game people are playing and buying miniatures for. That's not to say that i think that Games Workshop wouldn't prefer to have people playing their game, only that selling miniatures would be the priority.

Sorry, I wasn't arguing it was going to be a threat to GW's profit, just acknowledging that there had been splinter.

i'm not gonna judge it until i see the full roster, but the design concepts seem a little....er, shallow. and GW has been leaning towards awfully shallow design policies the last several years. i hope they'll embrace the sense of character that made WFB the big name of rank'n'flank style wargaming.
