Those are clearly player characters. :D

That's the Schaffenfest surely? Rows of tents and bunting etc.

there's a bit near the center that might be, but most of it is just....squares piled up and drawn at different angles and scales. it might as well be on the side of a mountain for how it looks, but i think they just put too much into the frame and couldn't accept they had to scale it back. honestly, it looks worse the more i come back to it so i'm gonna try not to.

I like on the original how the artist started “Malthusius” out boldly and then quickly regretted it and stuffed the rest of the letters in before he ran out of space.

The original GW printing ending the adventure with a suggestion to follow it up with The Enemy Within, but that was just an invitation to buy GW's products, not an implication that they were part of the same campaign.
1. GW's WFRP1 rulebook indeed suggest to follow the Oldenhaller Contract with Shadows over Bögenhafen...
2. GW's The Enemy Within book suggest that Shadows over Bögenhafen could either be played following The Mistaken Identity, or, in a less satisfactory manner, The Oldenhaller Contract, or even be played as an independent adventure...

So the link, as weak as it was, was present before James Wallis's Carrion up the Reik.

Yes, as I mentioned above, there was a suggestion to play The Enemy Within after The Oldenhaller Contract, but there were no narrative links between the two before Carrion Up the Reik; and The Oldenhaller Contract was not originally considered part of The Enemy Within campaign.

My point was that this link was both present in The Oldenhaller Contract (within the rulebook) and in Shadows over Bögenhafen (within The Enemy Within book). Hence, there was two suggestions to play The Enemy Within after The Oldenhaller Contract. As you write, there was however no narrative links between those two scenarii before Carrion up the Reik and The Mistaken Identity was anyway presented as a better way to introduce Shadow over Bögenhafen.

(And, in my humble opinion, The Oldenhaller contract is better set during Death on the Reik than before Shadows over Bögenhafen for whoever want to get narrative things connected with Carrion up the Reik).

Shadows over Bogenhafen suggests following on from The Oldenhaller Contract as "less satisfactory" and doesn't add much of a narrative hook; "Bogenhafen is lovely this time of year." TBH, that'd be quite compelling for the Empire if we didn't sll know lovely meant trans-dimensional portals to hell.

even for people new to the setting, that's not a great hook by itself. i wouldn't bother with tying the two directly together anyways, it's kind of a needless stretch. if they don't have a map you can just have them stumble into town for the plot when they leave.

I was mocking the description of 'lovely'

I think the authors were fully aware it was not a good lead in but had to write something after The OC mentions TEW. I took it as a bit of lampshading on their part.
